Today Ryan Giggs signed a contract extension with Manchester United that should effectively see him play through to June 2014 and past his 40th birthday, but how long will he actually go on for? Bookmaker Paddy Power have odds of 2/9 that Giggs will retire in the 2013/2014 season but also odds of 11/4 that he'll one better and retire in the 2014/2015 season.
Giggs is set to play his 1000th professional game, either against Norwich this weekend or against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. Given his phenomenal stamina Paddy Power are also giving odds on whether he will outlast Sir Alex. Giggs is odds of 2/9 to retire before Ferguson whereas Ferguson has odds of 11/4 to retire before Giggs. Giggs is also odds on to retire before his old team mate David Beckham – Giggs has odds of 1/3 to retire first whereas Beckham has odds of 2/1 to retire first.

With the new contract Giggs will go into his 23rd season with Manchester United and its clear Sir Alex still thinks he has an important role to play.
