NEWCASTLE UNITED 5 CARDIFF CITY 1
POST MATCH REACTION

An Andy Carroll brace helped to inspire a 5-1 Newcastle United victory over Cardiff City in last night's Championship clash.

The Magpies destroyed the Bluebirds, who were previously on an unbeaten run of eight matches, with Peter Lovenkrands winning double sealing victory after Cardiff defender Gabor Gyepes had put the ball in his own net.

But it was Carroll who caught the eye of Newcastle manager Chris Haughton, who hailed the local star as a possible successor to Alan Shearer, whose number nine shirt is vacant this season.

Hughton said: "Potentially, he is number nine material. He's a player who leads the line.

"In some ways, he's an old-fashioned centre-forward who has a prowess in the air, but he's still developing his game and he has to continue to do that.

"He has good football skills for a big man, but what he has to add to his game is goals, and he was able to do that tonight."

Haughton was also very pleased with the team's overall display, feeling it was perhaps the best display of football his side have shown this season.

He explained: "There have been some really good performances - I think you can take as much out of Sheffield United away 1-0 as you can tonight.

"But from a footballing point of view, this is the most pleasing."

City manager Dave Jones admitted that Cardiff's slow introduction into the game had cost them the points.

However he was delighted for veteran Stephen McPhail's who made his first appearance since recovering from cancer.

He said: "He has had the all-clear and I thought him being back today, he didn't look out of place.

"Yes, maybe just a little half a yard, but that will come with games, that will come with the more games he gets.

"But he feels fit and he feels strong. I just didn't want to go into the last 20 minutes of that half where he is drained and he pulls something again."
