Here's our review of the golf tournaments taking place this year

BMW PGA Championship
The UK Professional golf tournament season gets underway at the end of May, with the PGA Championship. Played at the Wentworth Golf Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, the tournament, first played in 1955, has been sponsored by BMW since 2005 and offers total prize money of £4.5 million. It never fails to attract an elite field, pursuing the large purse. Recent winners include Englishman Paul Casey, who held off compatriot Ross Fisher by a single stroke in 2009 and Spaniard Miguel £ngel Jim£nez, who won following a "sudden death" playoff against Englishman Oliver Wilson in the 2008 event.
Dane Anders Hansen was successful for the 2nd time in 2007, defeating England`s Justin Rose, again in a playoff.

Celtic Manor Wales Open
The beginning of June sees the Wales Open at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, South Wales. Despite only being in existence since 2000, the tournament has become established as an important European Tour event, its "Twenty Ten" course having been designed to host the 2010 Ryder Cup. With a total purse of £1.8 million, it invariably attracts a strong field, but has thrown up some "shock" results in its 10-year history, including 2009 winner, rank outsider Dane Jeppe Huldahl, Australian Scott Strange in 2008 and another Dane, Steen Tinning in the inaugural event.

Barclays Scottish Open
July`s Barclays Scottish Open, held at Loch Lomond Golf Club, Glasgow, Scotland is viewed as the traditional "warm-up" for the Open Championship and as such generally attracts an outstanding field, chasing prize total money of £3 million. Recent winners include highly-ranked German, Martin Kaymer (2009), Northern Ireland`s Graeme McDowell (2008), Frenchman Gregory Havret (2007), who defeated Phil Mickelson in a playoff and Swede Johan Edfors (2006).

The Open Championship
Immediately following the Loch Lomond event, the most prestigious event in golf, the Open Championship takes place. 59-year-old Tom Watson came close to making golfing history at Turnberry in 2009, leading or being close to the lead for 72 holes, only to lose out to compatriot Stewart Cink in the subsequent playoff. Other notable Open Championship achievements include both Irishman Padraig Harrington (2007 Carnoustie and 2008 Royal Birkdale) and American Tiger Woods (2006 Hoylake and 2005 Old Course, St. Andrews) lifting the Claret Jug in consecutive years. Woods was winning his third Open Championship since 2000. The 2010 event, which returns to the Old Course, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, seems sure to produce all the excitement, tales of triumph and disaster that have accompanied previous Opens.

Johnnie Walker Championship
At the end of August, the Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterrarder, Perthshire, Scotland, hosts the Johnnie Walker Championship, with a total purse of £1.4 million. A European Tour event since 1999, it has thrown up several lesser-known winners, including Swede Peter Hedblom (2009), Scot Marc Warren (2007), Italian Emanuele Canonica (2005) and Englishman Miles Tunnicliff in 2004).

The Ryder Cup
From 1st October, the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, South Wales hosts the UK`s "bonus" event for 2010; the Ryder Cup. This is a biennial event between team of twelve golfers from the USA and Europe, featuring foursomes, four-ball and singles matches, 28 in total, played over 3 days. It is a source of great rivalry between fans and players alike. The Europeans lead 6-4 in the last 10 renewals of the event, including retaining the Cup by halving the matches at The Belfry in 1989. However, the American players put up some excellent performances to regain the Cup, by 16£ points to 11£ points, at Valhalla Golf Club, Kentucky, in 2008.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
October`s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is an unusual event in that it is played over 3 different courses, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course, St, Andrews, Scotland. The $5 million event requires a range of diverse golfing skills to cope with the different characteristics of the courses. Recent winners include Englishmen Simon Dyson and Nick Dougherty, Swede Robert Karlsson and Irishman Padraig Harrington. Unfortunately, following on the heels of the Ryder Cup, the 2010 event seems likely to have an "after the Lord Mayor`s show" feel to it.

All the UK professional tournament provide a tough test for players and the premier clubs made by Callaway golf clubs UK.
